The Habanero

Who doesn't like a hot pepper like the habanero? Perhaps there are those that do not enjoy the hot, spicy tingling that this pepper brings to the table. But for those of us that do love them, we simply can not get enough of them. There are many different types of peppers to be had. Some claim that this is the hottest pepper in the world. Even if it wasn't, it still packs a punch worthy of the title! The habanero is a pepper not to be messed with! Let's talk about the habanero for a moment. Unripe peppers are green. As they ripen, their colors can range from any of the following. They can be red, orange, white, brown or even pink. When fully grown, they are about 2-6 centimeters long. Now, when we talk about the heat of this hot pepper, we mean heat. On the Scoville heat scale, these chili peppers come in at 200,000-300,000. The higher the number, the higher the heat! There are many people who enjoy this level of heat that is found in the habanero. It is amazing the things that can be done with them. The hottest variety of these peppers is called Red Savinas. This variety is grown in Southern California in a controlled environment. This pepper's heat hits an amazing 580,000 Scoville heat units! Because of the love for this type of hot pepper, there continues to be studies and experiments done to develop even hotter peppers!
